From Funding to Impact: USW Success Stories Demonstrate Why Export Market Development Matters

Success is shown through progress and results.

For U.S. Wheat Associates (USW), the positive contributions made to the wheat industry are reflected in the annual success stories submitted to the USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). These stories reflect funding sources and highlight accomplishments from market development programs. From Thailand to the Dominican Republic, success stories highlight the impact of the products leaving U.S. farmers’ fields on their way to support global food supply.

Submitted in August 2026, 16 success stories highlighted unique portions of USW’s work around the world, showcasing purchases, seminars and shipments in the 2025-2026 marketing year. The success stories detail a myriad of outputs and outcomes, including multi-year impact demonstrating changes over time, increased sales of U.S. products abroad and introducing a U.S. commodity or product to a market.

An earlier reported 2025-2026 success story was the USW Crop Quality Seminar story about driving sales to Nigeria’s largest flour miller. In Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria is the largest buyer of U.S. wheat. The seminar was hosted to ensure continued market share in Nigeria and emphasize U.S. wheat quality and value. All 50 participants were funded to attend the seminar by the Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP). At the seminar, information was shared about the 2025 wheat harvest and quality information for various wheat varieties. Due to the information learned about quality, price and supply, Flour Mills of Nigeria purchased a consignment of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) and soft red winter (SRW) wheat in November 2025.

A historic breakthrough achieved by USW in cooperation with the Indonesian milling sector was another highlighted success story. Indonesia is a top three wheat-importing country globally, but the growth market remains highly competitive, and millers are price sensitive. The Memorandum of Understanding signed on July 7, 2025, with Indonesia’s flour milling association, APTINDO, was a strong accomplishment for U.S. wheat. Supporting this commitment was funding from the Market Access Program (MAP) and RAPP. This funding supported trade teams, short courses, seminars and workshops. This funding ultimately supported a strengthened partnership to accomplish the committed purchase of 800,000 metric tons (MT) (29.4 million bushels).

The submitted success stories demonstrate the value of contributing success stories to the USDA FAS. This annual activity illustrates the return on investment of market development programs, ultimately providing strong justification for continued investment from taxpayers and industry partners. Farmers’ understanding of where their product and checkoff dollars are going is a key component of the value success stories bring.

U.S. wheat depends on the successful public-private partnership between USW’s state wheat commission members and USDA-FAS export market development programs. Checkoff contributions qualify USW to apply for matching funds through programs like the MAP, Foreign Market Development (FMD) and AFTPP programs. U.S. Wheat leverages those combined funds to position the six classes of U.S. wheat as the world’s most reliable source of high-quality wheat for global milling and baking operations.
